The Month of Two Birthdays
Vasanta Das, Jyotish · vasantadas.com
· · ·
A small note on dates before we begin, as always. This letter follows the Indian and European correspondence. Two moments differ for readers in the Americas: the new Moon falls there on the evening of September 10 rather than the morning of the 11th, and the Sun enters Virgo late on September 16 rather than in the early hours of the 17th. Everything else lands on the same day worldwide.
Dear friends,
At the close of last month’s letter I wrote that everything in August was preparation, that the eclipses were clearing the ground and the festivals were weaving a net to catch the grace when it falls. September is the month the grace falls.
It falls twice. On September 4 comes Sri Krishna Janmashtami, the appearance day of Sri Krishna, and on September 19 comes Sri Radhastami, the appearance day of Srimati Radharani. Two birthdays in one month, the two halves of the Divine standing fifteen days apart like two lamps at either end of a bridge. Everything else September brings, and it brings a great deal of good, arranges itself between these two flames.
And the sky itself has dressed for the occasion. After a turbulent August of eclipses and gandanta crossings, September opens with the planets standing in dignity one after another, the way a court rises when the King is about to enter. The Sun is in his own sign of Leo. Venus rises out of her fall into her own sign of Libra. Mercury climbs to his exaltation in Virgo. Jupiter remains exalted in Cancer. Only Saturn walks backward, quietly, doing his patient autumn work. It is the strongest sky we have had all year, and it arrives exactly in time for the birthdays.
The Heart Rises: Venus Comes Home to Libra
September 2 to October 3
In August I asked you to wait. Venus was passing through Virgo, the sign of her fall, and I wrote that it was not the month to draw conclusions about your heart, that the perception of love was filtered through a critical lens that would pass. On September 2, it passes. Venus enters Libra, her own sign and her mulatrikona, the very seat of her power, and the heart that spent a month kneeling stands up and remembers itself.
You may feel it as simply as this: the inner critic goes quiet. Your partner’s flaws shrink back to their true size. The mirror softens. Compliments land again. The conclusions you were tempted to draw in August can now be looked at in honest light, and most of them, you will find, were the transit talking.
Venus in Libra is the healer of relationships. Conversations find their balance, differences smooth over more easily, beauty returns to ordinary things: the table set with care, music in the kitchen, the walk at dusk. For those with Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn rising, Venus forms Malavya Yoga by transit, one of the five great configurations, and since exalted Jupiter is holding Hamsa Yoga for these same four signs, you are living under two Mahapurusha yogas at once this month. That is a rare umbrella. Stand under it: repair what August strained, say the loving thing you postponed, make the home beautiful.
One quiet note for the horizon. Venus will pause and turn retrograde on October 3, beginning a long, reflective revision of the heart that will carry us through the autumn. We will speak of it properly in next month’s letter. For now, know that September is the clear water before that turning, which makes it the month to act on the heart’s behalf rather than merely think about it.
Sri Krishna Janmashtami
September 4
And then, two days after the heart is restored, He arrives.
Krishna was born at midnight, in a prison, in the dark half of the month, under the nakshatra Rohini. His parents were in chains. The tyrant Kamsa had killed six children before Him. Everything about the circumstances said that nothing good could be born here. And into exactly that darkness came the most beautiful child the universe has ever held, and the chains opened by themselves, and the doors unlocked themselves, and the river parted for His father’s feet.
This is the whole teaching of Janmashtami, and it never grows old: the Lord is not waiting for your circumstances to improve before He comes. He specializes in midnight arrivals.
The sky this year honors the day with unusual tenderness. On September 4 the Moon stands exalted in Taurus, in Rohini itself, Krishna’s own birth star, and Rohini’s lord Venus stands freshly royal in her own sign. The Moon of Gokula rises full of strength in the very mansion where He was born. I read this as a year when Janmashtami’s sweetness will be especially easy to taste, even for those tasting it for the first time.
How to observe
Fast during the day as you are able, fully or on fruits, and keep the evening for Him. Sing, or listen to singing. Bathe a small Deity or picture of Krishna with milk and honey if you have the means, or simply offer a flower and a flame. Stay up toward midnight if you can, because the hour of His birth has a stillness that belongs to no other hour of the year. And on September 5 comes Nandotsava — cook something festive. Share it. Joy given away is the proper worship of that day.
Annada Ekadashi, and Mercury Ascends
September 7
Three days after Janmashtami comes Annada Ekadashi. Her story concerns King Harishchandra, who lost his kingdom, his family, and his own freedom through a vow kept too honestly, and who was restored to everything through the observance of this Ekadashi. She is the Ekadashi of those who feel life has taken more than it returned. Fast as you are able, chant a little more than usual, and let her do her quiet accounting in your favor.
The same day, Mercury enters Virgo, his sign of exaltation, where he stays until September 26. Mercury exalted is the mind at its finest: precise, quick, discriminating without being cruel. For Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces risings this forms Bhadra Yoga by transit. For everyone, these three weeks favor study, writing, planning, negotiation, and every task that rewards a clear head. If there is a document to draft, a course to begin, a conversation that needs exact words, place it between September 7 and 26.
The Strong Sky, and Its Tender Interior
Now a word for those who like to look one layer deeper, because September carries a secret, and knowing it will save you some confusion.
On the surface, the planets are magnificent: Sun in own sign, Venus in own sign, Mercury exalted, Jupiter exalted, and only Saturn retrograde. But underneath, in the Navamsa, the soul-chart of the sky itself, several of these strong planets pass through debilitated positions this month. Jupiter’s inner weakness is repaired by a hidden exchange with Saturn, which turns his Capricorn navamsa into practical, buildable wisdom. But the nodes find no such rescue, and Rahu’s inner position in Scorpio can stir the old poisons: obsession, resentment, the desire to win an argument at any cost.
In ordinary language: September is a month of great outer strength with a soft inner lining. Things will go well, and precisely because they go well, watch the interior. If a sudden wave of anger, jealousy, or fixation rises in you this month, seemingly out of proportion to its cause, recognize it as the undertow beneath a strong tide. Do not act on it the same day. Enjoy the blessings with both hands, and hold them humbly.
The New Moon
September 11
The new Moon falls on September 11 in Leo, in Purva Phalguni, with the Sun and Ketu nearby. Purva Phalguni is the nakshatra of rest after celebration. Coming a week after Janmashtami, this dark Moon is the sky’s invitation to a quiet day: rest, digest, let the festival settle into you. Ketu’s presence gives the day a slightly ancestral flavor. Light a candle for them if you feel it.
Ganesha Chaturthi
September 14
On September 14 comes Ganesha Chaturthi, the arrival of the remover of obstacles, together with Swarna Gauri Vratam honoring his mother Gauri. For eleven days, until the Visarjan on September 25, Ganesha is welcomed as a guest into homes.
There is a teaching in the arrival and the departure. We invite the remover of obstacles in, and then we practice letting even Him go, because the tradition knows that clinging turns even blessings into weight. If you welcome Ganesha this year, ask him for the specific obstacle you most need lifted, and when the 25th comes, thank him and release him with a whole heart. Om Gam Ganapataye Namah, before any new undertaking this month.
The Sun Steps into Virgo
September 17
On September 17, at Kanya Sankranti, the Sun leaves his own Leo and enters Virgo, joining the exalted Mercury. Two things happen at once, and both are good news. First, the Sun finally walks free of Ketu — that hollow-recognition feeling breaks on the 17th. Vitality and motivation return to their ordinary warmth. Second, Sun and exalted Mercury together in Virgo form a strong Budha-Aditya Yoga, the union of light and intellect. The second half of September is superb for detailed work, health routines, analysis, editing, accounting, and every craft where care is the virtue.
Mars Falls, and Jupiter Catches Him
September 18
On September 18, Mars enters Cancer, his sign of debilitation. But this year the sky has arranged a rescue in advance. Exalted Jupiter is standing in Cancer, waiting, and the moment Mars falls, Jupiter catches him. In the classical language this is Neecha Bhanga, the cancellation of debilitation, and the pairing is Guru-Mangala Yoga. Strength that falls into the hands of wisdom does not break; it matures.
When irritation rises, give it a task instead of a target. Repair something. Cook for someone. Carry something heavy for someone who cannot. Mars in Cancer heals through protective care. And on September 18 itself, keep the day simple — it is the one dense day in an otherwise bright month. The 19th will more than repay your patience.
Sri Radhastami
September 19
Because the next morning belongs to Her.
On September 19 comes Sri Radhastami, the appearance day of Srimati Radharani, and I will confess to you, dear friends, that of all the days in the Vaishnava year, this is the one closest to my own heart. She appeared fifteen days after Him, in Barsana, found upon a golden lotus in the Yamuna. Her eyes remained closed until the day the infant Krishna was brought before her, and the first thing she ever saw in this world was Him.
Who is She? The tradition answers with great care: Radharani is the tenderness of God. Whatever in the Divine is mercy, sweetness, patience with our failures, and love that asks nothing, has a name and a face, and the name is Radha. Krishna is the Lord of all energies; She is His energy of pure affection.
How to observe
Fast until midday if you are able. Offer Her what She loves: flowers, especially roses; something sweet made with your own hands; a lamp at dusk. Chant with the feeling of a child calling the mother. Those who wish may sing or read the Radha Kripa Kataksha Stotra. One glance is considered enough.
Between the two birthdays, this whole month is a bridge from strength to sweetness.
Walk the fifteen days between them as a small pilgrimage.
Vamana Dvadashi and Vijaya Mahadvadashi
September 23
On September 23 the calendar gives us a rare doubled blessing: the appearance day of Sri Vamanadeva, falling together with Vijaya Mahadvadashi. As with the Mahadvadashi in August, the fast is kept on this day, the twelfth, and broken on the thirteenth.
Vamana’s story is the tradition’s masterpiece on the subject of smallness. The Lord approached the emperor Bali as a boy small enough to be overlooked, and asked for only three steps of land. The first step covered the earth. The second covered the heavens. And for the third, Bali offered his own head. On a day named Vijaya, victory, the teaching is exact: the real victory is the third step, the one where what remains of our pride becomes the offering.
The Full Moon in Saturn’s Arms
September 26
September closes on the 26th with a full Moon in Pisces, in Uttara Bhadrapada, standing right beside the retrograde Saturn. A full Moon beside Saturn is not a sorrowful Moon; it is a serious one. It is a beautiful night for a long look at the year so far, for finishing what should be finished, and for the kind of gratitude that has weight in it.
The Fortnight of the Ancestors: Pitri Paksha Begins
September 27
And then, on September 27, the veil thins.
Pitri Paksha, the fortnight of the forefathers, runs from this day to the new Moon in the second week of October. The tradition holds that in these two weeks the departed of our line draw near, able to receive what is offered with a directness available at no other time of year.
You do not need elaborate rites to keep it. Offer water, facing south, with the names of your departed in your heart. Feed someone in their name. Cook a dish your grandmother or grandfather loved and give it away. Look at the old photographs and say thank you out loud. And where a relationship ended unhealed, this fortnight is the appointed time to say inwardly what was never said, and to set the weight down. The ancestors are not asking us to carry them. They are asking to be remembered, and then both sides walk lighter.

Closing
Dear friends, some months teach through difficulty. September teaches through abundance, which is the harder curriculum than it sounds. It is easy to remember the Divine at midnight in the prison; the whole heart cries out on its own. It is in the bright months, when Venus is home and Mercury is brilliant and the court of heaven stands in full dress, that we tend to forget who the celebration is for.
The month itself will not let us forget. It opens with His birthday and crowns itself with Hers, and it ends with two weeks of remembering everyone who carried us here. Birth, love, and gratitude to the line we come from: that is September’s whole syllabus, dressed in the strongest sky of the year.
So enjoy everything this month offers, and enjoy it the way the residents of Gokula enjoyed their festival: with the child at the center of it.
May the Moon of Rohini shine on your Janmashtami night,
and may Her glance, that one sidelong glance that is enough, find you sometime around the 19th.
With warmth,
the servant of the Lord of the Spring,
Vasanta Das
